Itinerary
Trip PlanExpand All

Start your day at Kathmandu Durbar Square, a place of historical and spiritual interest that once defined old Kathmandu. An architectural masterpiece, definitely a pride of this place, the whole square consists of old palaces, courtyards, and temples that date back to the Malla period. You can stroll in the narrow alleys, and the ambience lets you feel the past, and the deeply set wooden carvings of the architecture amplify this ambience.

Proceed to Swayambhunath, better known as the Monkey Temple, which crowns the crest of a hillock overlooking the valley. This is one of the most recognizable stupas of Nepal, it's all-seeing eyes of Buddha watching over Kathmandu. Here, the signs of both Hinduism and Buddhism find their place in a harmonious synthesis of both religions-a place of spiritual refuge for both pilgrims and tourists.

Continue to the tranquil Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest in the world. The huge mandala makes the place very strong with the energy of holiness; it is the worldly vision of the focal point of Tibetan Buddhism. Walk around the stupa and join the monks and locals in their meditative kora, taking in the peacefulness of the place. Smell the incense-scented air, and the silence is well-complemented by prayer wheels.

Finally, visit the holy Pashupatinath Temple, the holiest Hindu temple in Nepal. It is this place where one can see typical throbbing spiritual and cultural activities involving the rites of cremation on the banks of the Bagmati River, offering deep insight into the lives of the Hindus. The pagoda-type temple is rich in ornamentation and is also very significant, being dedicated to Lord Shiva and attracting large crowds of devotees from far and near.

This way, by the end of the day, you will have met the rich cultural tapestry of Kathmandu and set the pace for the rest of your Nepalese adventure.
