Namche Bazaar: Altitude, What to Expect, and Trekker Tips

Namche Bazaar at 3,440m, Khumbu Valley, Nepal

The first thing most trekkers notice about Namche Bazaar is the size of it. At 3,440m, this is a working town with bakeries, gear shops, bars, ATMs, fast Wi-Fi, and restaurants serving wood-fired pizza and espresso. Our guides use Namche as the first real acclimatization stop on every Everest region itinerary. This page covers altitude, acclimatization protocol, facilities, food, and the questions trekkers ask us most before arriving.

Altitude and Location

Namche Bazaar sits at 3,440m (11,286ft) in the Solukhumbu District, built into a natural amphitheatre above the Bhote Koshi and Dudh Koshi river confluence. The town is 10.5km from Phakding, a climb of roughly 6 to 7 hours that includes the Hillary Suspension Bridge crossing at 3,300m. From Namche, Tengboche is 10km further, typically 5 to 6 hours of walking.

Namche is the administrative and commercial centre of the Khumbu region. The Sagarmatha National Park check post sits just below town, where rangers verify permits before allowing entry. Keep your Sagarmatha National Park permit and Lukla entry permit handy, as they will be checked before you enter the town.

Acclimatization in Namche Bazaar

Standard itineraries spend 2 nights in Namche Bazaar, and this is not padding. The climb from Phakding to Namche gains over 800m in a days, and the body needs time to adjust before moving higher. Skipping or shortening this stop is the most common reason trekkers develop serious altitude sickness above Namche.

On the acclimatization day, our guides take groups up to the Everest View Hotel at 3,880m, the highest hotel in the world according to the Guinness World Records. The hike takes 2 to 3 hours return and gives the body a higher altitude exposure before descending back to sleep at 3,440m. This is the standard high-low acclimatization method used across Himalayan trekking.

Watch for headache, loss of appetite, and disturbed sleep during your first night in Namche. These are common and usually resolve by the second night. If symptoms worsen or include confusion, difficulty walking, or a dry persistent cough, tell your guide immediately. Descent is the only reliable treatment for serious altitude sickness.

What to Do in Namche Bazaar

The Namche Saturday market runs weekly and draws traders and locals from villages across the Khumbu valley. It starts early and winds down by midday. Trekkers who arrive on Friday night or Saturday morning can walk through it before continuing the route.

The Sherpa Culture Museum, located in the grounds of the Sagarmatha National Park Visitor Centre just above town, covers the history, tools, and traditions of the Sherpa community with free entry. The Everest View Hotel hike, covered under acclimatization above, is the standard half-day outing. The ridge above town also gives a direct sightline to Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam on a clear morning.

Accommodation and Facilities

Namche has more than 50 teahouses and lodges, ranging from basic double rooms at NPR 500 to 800 per night to newer guesthouses with attached bathrooms and heating at NPR 2,000 to 3,500. For those seeking extra comfort, luxury teahouses are available, offering rooms that usually cost between USD 50 and USD 200 per night. Hot showers are available at most lodges for an additional NPR 200 to 400. Our groups typically stay at mid-range lodges with attached facilities to reduce fatigue during the acclimatization day.

There are two ATMs in Namche Bazaar, operated by Nepal Investment Bank and Himalayan Bank. They are functional most of the time but run out of cash during peak season (April and October). Carry enough Nepali rupees from Kathmandu to cover at least 4 to 5 days past Namche. Wi-Fi is available at most lodges, typically at NPR 200 to 500 for a day pass. Mobile data works on both NTC and Ncell networks, though speed drops above 4,000m.

Food at This Altitude

Namche has the widest food selection of any stop on the EBC route. Trekkers can find dal bhat, momos, pasta, wood-fired pizza, soup, and freshly baked bread. Bakeries open early and are useful for buying snacks to carry above Namche, where food variety drops significantly.

Dal bhat remains the best option at altitude: high in carbohydrates, freshly cooked, and refillable at most lodges at a fixed price around NPR 700 to 900. Avoid raw vegetables and unpeeled fruit above Namche. Digestive issues compound fatigue and affect acclimatization. Drink 3 to 4 litres of water per day. Alcohol slows acclimatization and is best avoided during the first two nights.

Common Questions

Are there ATMs in Namche Bazaar?

Yes. Two ATMs operate in Namche Bazaar, run by Nepal Investment Bank and Himalayan Bank. They frequently run out of cash in April and October. Withdraw enough in Kathmandu to last through Gorak Shep, as no reliable ATMs exist above Namche on the EBC route.

Is the Wi-Fi good enough to work from Namche?

Most lodges offer paid Wi-Fi that handles email, messaging, and light browsing. Video calls are inconsistent. If staying two nights for acclimatization, one good connection window is usually enough for essential communication.

Can I buy or rent gear in Namche?

Yes. Namche has around 30 gear shops selling and renting jackets, sleeping bags, trekking poles, and boots. Prices are 20 to 30 percent higher than Kathmandu's Thamel district. Rent or buy essentials in Kathmandu and use Namche shops only for replacements or forgotten items.

How hard is the climb into Namche from Phakding?

The climb is the hardest single ascent in the first half of the EBC route. It gains roughly 600m over the final 3km before town. Most trekkers take 6 to 7 hours from Phakding including breaks. Start early to avoid afternoon cloud cover and heat.

Do I need a permit to enter Namche?

Two permits are required before the Namche check post: a Sagarmatha National Park entry permit (NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals) and Lukla VDC fees (NPR 3,000). Both are available at checkpost ion Monjo, near Lukla. Carry originals, not photocopies.

Treks That Pass Through Namche Bazaar

Namche Bazaar sits on the main Khumbu trail and is a mandatory stop on every major Everest region route. Trekkers moving in either direction, toward Base Camp or returning, pass through it at least twice.
