Trek Overview

Journey into Nepal’s Breathtaking Wilderness: The Manaslu Circuit Trek

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is an adventure combined with the opportunity to discover real culture in a rather unexplored part of the Himalayas. The trek actually encircles Mt. Manaslu, the eighth highest peak on Earth, which rises to 8,163 meters. Though more trekkers are starting to come each year, it is still quite out-of-the-way and untouched. This makes it perfect for those who want to avoid the busy trails.

It's a 12 day trek through plush forests, terraced fields, and small villages, with stunning mountain views. You get to meet simple and traditionally living locals in Tibetan-influenced settlements. Among the wildlife that this Manaslu Conservation Area has to offer, the rare opportunity for seeing such animals as the snow leopard and red panda exist.

What makes the Manaslu trek special is its wild, untamed beauty. The trek starts low in green river valleys and rises to the high pass at Larke 5,160 meters. Though exhausting, the views from there are stunning and amaze the thinker with the Manaslu range, and many other peaks. Manaslu Circuit Trek is a lifetime journey for any first-timer or experienced trekker seeking adventure.

  • Acclimatization is best done on rest days.
  • Find quiet routes to peace or for an adventure.
  • Capture memorable moments with great views for snapshots.
  • Tailor-made itinerary.

What to Expect on this off the beaten trail

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is both long and rewarding, lasting 14 to 16 days. From the warm jungles up to cold alpine zones, you will be trekking upwards. Be prepared to walk 5-7 hours each day, though numbers of days are longer, especially over the Larke Pass. Besides the gain in altitude, with the gain comes fluctuations in weather, plants, and scenery. The rugged and wild surroundings come into view as you go higher up: enormous mountains, glacial rivers.

Accommodations range from teahouses to basic lodges. Basic amenity teahouses, especially in the remoteness of Samagaun and Dharamsala, offer a warm stopover. Meal options during the trek include mostly basic Nepali fares such as dal bhat, noodles, and potatoes. These foods provide energy for exhaustive days of walking.

It is important to remember that the altitude should be considered. The highest is the Larke Pass at 5,160 meters, necessitating acclimatization days. Rest days are put into the trek to get your body accustomed to the changes-for example, a day in Samagaun, where one will take an hike to Birendra Lake.

Essential Permits for the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Before starting the Manaslu Circuit Trek, it’s important to get the required permits for a safe and organized trip. The two main permits are the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (MRAP) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP).

  • Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (MRAP): Since the trek passes through restricted areas near the Tibetan border, the MRAP is essential. This permit allows access to restricted parts of the trail and includes entry to the Manaslu Conservation Area. You can only get the MRAP through registered trekking agencies, which handle the process for you. It costs about USD 100 for the first seven days, with an extra USD 15 for each additional day. These fees support conservation efforts, helping to keep the region’s beauty intact.
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): As you move into the Annapurna region, you’ll need the ACAP. This permit costs around USD 30 per person and helps protect the biodiversity of this UNESCO World Heritage site. You can get the ACAP from trekking agencies or local offices in places like Kathmandu or Pokhara. Your payment helps preserve the area’s natural beauty and benefits local communities.

Obtaining these permits is not just a formality; they reflect your respect for the environment and the rich cultural heritage of the region. For the Manaslu Circuit Trek, the government has compelled everyone to take a registered guide with them, and they also specified trekking in a group of two or more. Having MRAP and ACAP in your pocket, you are ready for the breathtaking trials of the Manaslu Circuit Trek, where nature meets conservation.

Larke Pass - 5,160 meters: The Ultimate Challenge

The Larke Pass (Larkya La) is a point that will undeniably be one of the many high points of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The climb up this high mountain pass that lays at 5,160 meters above sea level may get tiring, but it is well rewarded together. On its climb, it will be offering arresting views around, such as the view of Mount Manaslu, Himlung Himal, and Cheo Himal. Enjoy every minute of mountain air, trekking right through the scenery that gives fame to this place.

Centuries ago, Larkya La had been a main trade route from Nepal into Tibet. Locals from either side-the Gurung and Tibetans-patravelled along this path, along with trade and other cultural exchanges. With every step now, going in their footsteps, one is able to feel a depth of history beneath one's feet. These old monasteries lining the trail really remind trekkers about the spiritual significance of this area, and often they make stops to say prayers for a safe journey.

The climb to Larkya La is steep and tough, but our experienced guides will make sure you acclimatize well and stay safe. When you finally reach the pass, the views are breathtaking, making every step worth it. You’ll get the chance to take stunning photos and feel the joy of conquering one of the highest passes in the Himalayas.

Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by the Shikhar’s representative. S/he will then transfer you to the hotel. Situated at an altitude of 1,400 meters, Kathmandu is your gateway to the majestic landscapes of Manaslu Region. A drive through the bustling streets brings one up close to the rich history and culture possessed by Nepal.

Free day at Kathmandu for sightseeing and exploring Thamel. Prepare for the onward journey; a short briefing of the trek will be provided with your guide, take your time to relax and explore the local markets for any last-minute gear or souvenirs.

Max Altitude: 1,400 m / 4,593 ft. Accommodation: Hotel

Today we wake up early to start our 9-10 hours drive; dazzling drive to the river village of Machha Khola at 900 meters: The road goes upwards through terraces, lush hills, and villages and gives us an idea about Nepal's diverse scenery. The ride is going to be bumpy while the scenery surely pays it back.

Arrive at Machha Khola and stretch your legs besides enjoying the serenity around you. Actually, it is a quiet riverside village on the banks of Budhi Gandaki River where your trek starts tomorrow.

Max Altitude: 900 m / 2,953 ft. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner IncludedAccommodation: Guesthouse

Your first day of trekking! The trail from Machha Khola to Jagat is scenic and exciting and will take you around 6 to 7 hours. The trek proceeds along the Budhi Gandaki River, crosses a suspension bridge, and sees you through small villages en route. Jagat, at an altitude of 1,370 meters, greets you as you go uphill through lush forests with wonderful waterfalls.

Stone-paved streets declare Jagat the entrance to the Manaslu Conservation Area. The village is rather pictorial and tranquil; thus, it acts as a perfect site for rest after the hike of the day.

Max Altitude: 1,370 m / 4,495 ft. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner IncludedAccommodation: Guesthouse

Today's hike to Deng goes for about 6 to 7 hours, going deeper into the Manaslu Region. The walk starts with an incline and then continues through bamboo and rhododendron forests. Besides the rapid Budhi Gandaki River, several crossings have to be done on suspension bridges.

Deng is a humble, quiet village that lies at an altitude of 1,860 meters, highly influenced by Tibetans. It's peaceful and quiet, dotted with prayer wheels and Mani stones-a taste of what lies ahead in terms of culture.

Max Altitude: 1,860 m / 6,102 ft. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner IncludedAccommodation: Guesthouse

Namrung from Deng is quite a dramatic trek. Today, it will be roughly 7-8 hours of trek as it gradually rises to gain altitude; the surrounding mountain scenery is spectacular. You will pass several villages, too, basic but colorfully adorned with Mani walls and prayer flags, reflecting the main prevailing influence of Tibetan Buddhism.

Namrung is a buzzing village at 2,630 meters above sea level, marked with elegance in the Manaslu range. The place is tastefully decorated by Tibetans, showing liveliness with monasteries and traditional stone houses giving a cultural grace to the trek.

Max Altitude: 2,630 m / 8,629 ft. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner IncludedAccommodation: Guesthouse

Today's trek is to Lho, 3,180 meters above sea level. Gradually, the mountain scenery during the trek will be breathtaking. While approaching Lho, the Mt. Manaslu will be fully in view-an astonishing backdrop.

Lho Village is highly rich in Tibetan culture and it houses a very beautiful monastery. From here, sweeping views of the Manaslu range are also seen. The clear mountain air and serene surroundings combined make this a memorable stop.

Max Altitude: 3,180 m / 10,433 ft. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner IncludedAccommodation: Guesthouse

Today's trek to Samagaun will take 5 to 6 hours and heads to an altitude gain gradually to 3,520 meters. The trail moves along the pine forests, alpine meadows, and the magnificent vistas of the Himalayas. Today's walk is very beautiful as the towering peaks will accompany you throughout the time.

Samagaon is a big Tibetan influenced village, so you should feel some cooler altitude as well as a differing culture prevailing here. You will be having all afternoon exploring the village, visiting a local monastery, and resting during the acclimatization day.

Max Altitude: 3,520 m / 11,548 ft. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner IncludedAccommodation: Guesthouse

Acclimatizing to the altitude, we spend the day sightseeing around Samagaun and do a short trek to Birendra Lake, a glacial lake lying at an altitude of 3,691 meters. This short trek provides great views over the turquoise-colored water encircled by snow-capped peaks. This day trek to Birendra Taal (Lake) will help you adjust to the higher elevations of the Manaslu region.

Later in the day, the remaining time may be utilised in Samagaun and its stillness observed. You can visit the most famous monastery known as Pungyen Monastery-a spiritual affair owing to the tall peaks that surround it.

Max Altitude: 3,691 m / 12,110 ft. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner IncludedAccommodation: Guesthouse

It will take us three to four hours to trek to Samdo today, which it situated at an elevation of 3,875-meter. That is rather short, and the altitude gain is slight. Sometimes it is tough, but usually manageable. Over time, the terrain becomes desolate. We see fewer trees and more rocky, open ground.

Samdo is a pretty far-flung village and is closer to the Tibetan border. It gives a glimpse of the lives the people lead out here at this height. The local culture is essentially Tibetan, and the setting is pretty nice.

Max Altitude: 3,875 m / 12,713 ft. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner IncludedAccommodation: Guesthouse

The trek from Samdo to Dharamshala will be 3-4 hours on steep and rocky trails that wind up to 4,460 meters high. Thus, today is a light day to have plenty of rest time before the toughest trek the following day.

Stay overnight at Dharamshala itself, en route to cross Larkya Pass for an overnight view with great scenery. Take enough nap for the big day ahead.

Max Altitude: 4,460 m / 14,632 ft. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner IncludedAccommodation: Guesthouse

We'll start very early in the morning, well before the light gets up, to do the longest and hardest part of the trek. The climb to Larkya Pass, at 5,160 meters, is pretty steep and strenuous, though the good thing is that this start will get you on top during those perfect conditions. It's really amazing with the crisp morning air and the gold diffused above the snow-capped peaks.

At the top, it surrounds you in a stunning panorama amidst the encircling giants of the Himalayas. Take a short rest, then start the long descent down to Bhimthang, 3,590 meters above sea level. It is spectacular-looking, has steep walls above, and you get through because you know that you pulled off a successful crossing. The Bhimthang valley is a great tranquil spot for rest after the day's adventure.

Max Altitude: 5,160 m / 16,929 ft. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner IncludedAccommodation: Guesthouse

Compared to the strenuous walk over Larkya Pass, today's walk to Goa is relatively easy downhill all the way with 6 to 7 hours of walking. The trail winds through alpine meadows, thick forests, and magnificent rivers. Downwards, the elevation goes down to 2,515 meters as the air gets warm.

It is a quiet, peaceful village where one can take rest and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. In fact, it is an ideal place for relaxation after those tiring days of high-altitude trekking.

Max Altitude: 2,515 m / 8,251 ft. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner IncludedAccommodation: Guesthouse

The trekking on the last day is relatively short, just about 1-hour walking to Tilje from where you catch a shared jeep to Besisahar and further drive 8-9 hours back to Kathmandu by bus. Along the drive, there is ample time to reflect on the incredible trek that you have just finished.

Back to Kathmandu, where one could rest properly now, perhaps enjoy the last night in Thamel, night-dreaming with that unforgettable adventure.

Max Altitude: 2,300 m / 7,546 ft. Meals: Breakfast & Lunch IncludedAccommodation: Hotel

After completing the Manaslu Circuit Trek, it is time to say goodbye to Nepal. According to the time of flight, there might be certain time spent sightseeing at dynamic marketplace or a last stroll around the Kathmandu city. Later we will drop you at Tribhuvan International Airport, three hours earlier before your flight time.

As you board the flight, remember this lifetime journey through the Himalayas and all the memories you will carry home. Safe journey!

Essential Information

Best Time for Manaslu Circuit Trek and Crossing the Larkya Pass

The best time for the Manaslu Circuit Trek is either in spring-from March to May-or in autumn-from September to November. This section shows generally clear and stable weather and allows some very good mountain views. In spring, this trail is really much lovelier with rhododendrons in full bloom and with moderate temperatures. In autumn, the route offers crisp air and crystal-clear skies, especially after the end of the monsoon, which provide breathtaking panoramas.

Crossings are easily made across the Larkya Pass during these two seasons. The trail is dry, and hardly does snow block the way. Yes, the pass is tough and risky in winter due to heavy snowfalls. During the time of monsoon starting from June till August, the trail becomes muddy and slippery; besides, there is poor visibility. You see the best time to safely and comfortably cross the pass in spring and autumn.

These are usually seen as perfect seasons to trek. Weather conditions are good and present fewer challenges to give a glimpse of the best natural beauty of the Manaslu region. During such seasons, one finds a perfect setting to genuinely enjoy the trek and cross over Larkya Pass without any problem.

Manaslu Circuit Trek: How Difficult Is It?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is classified as a moderate to tough trek. With a total duration of about 14 days, steep ascents, and descents over a variety of terrain, the trail becomes challenging when it comes to climbing up to the 5,160-meter Larkya Pass, which requires bodily stamina and a strong mind.

However, with proper guidance and preparation, even a first-timer can easily walk through this trek. Also, while experience of prior trekking helps, fitness and determination are enough to see it through. We, at Shikhar Adventure, send across personalized training tips and suggestions, keeping in mind the existing state of your fitness. Our experienced guides ensure that you acclimatize well and move at a pace that works for your group.

Safety is the top priority. Guides monitor the condition of a trekker regarding his hydration and acclimatization w.r.t the height. To this end, we schedule acclimatization days during the itinerary so people may gradually get acclimatized to height gains. We would love to let the beginners try their luck too because here they'll be completely supported. The Manaslu Circuit Trek gets very rewarding when one prepares well, since the great views and real sense of accomplishment will be at the end.

Major Attractions

One of the trek’s main highlights is crossing the Larkya Pass at 5,160 meters. The climb is tough, but the views from the top make it all worth it. You’ll see some of the world’s most famous peaks, like Mount Manaslu, Cheo Himal, and Himlung Himal.

Besides the mountain views, the Manaslu trek is a journey through history and culture. You’ll walk through Tibetan villages like Namrung and Lho. Here, prayer flags wave in the wind, and old monasteries show the deep Buddhist roots of the region. This is a culturally rich trek-either by visiting the ancient Gompas-monasteries or by learning the local culture and customs.

Nature lovers will love the Manaslu Conservation Area. One can see several wild animals here, such as the Himalayan tahr and several species of langur monkeys, in this protected zone. If you are fortunate, you might glimpse the rare snow leopard.

Why You Should Do This Trek

Manaslu Circuit Trek offers a unique wilderness adventure filled with tranquility and myriad cultural experiences to seekers in the great Himalayas. This track, compared to the Everest or Annapurna area, is less crowded and thus easily allows trekking to reach out to nature and local lives.

The positive side of this journey is not without its drawbacks and hence makes the victories all the more beautiful. Cross the tough Larkya Pass, stand at the top, and see a different view with mountains all around. Beautiful landscapes combined with Tibetan Buddhist culture make your journey calm and exciting at the same time.

The Manaslu Trek is one of those essential activities for those who want to escape crowds and witness the raw beauty that Nepal has to offer. A back step in time in the hidden mountain villages, discovery of a region rich in nature and culture.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Altitude Guide

The Manaslu Circuit Trek takes one through different altitudes-from green lowland villages to high mountain passes. Entering into the wilderness, the journey starts off at approximately 900 m or 2,953 feet in Machha Khola. You would witness amazing views and a changing landscape in climbing, but similarly important would be knowing how altitude affects you.

Jagat greets you at 1,370 meters (4,495 feet) where you actually start gaining height. The various villages on the way, such as Deng at 1,860 meters (6,109 feet), show you village life. The trek rises to reach Namrung at 2,630 meters (8,628 feet) and Lho Village at 3,180 meters (10,433 feet), where the trek becomes rather challenging.

At Samagaun, at 3,520 meters (11,519 feet), it’s important to acclimatize. You can enjoy stunning views of Manaslu and nearby peaks while your body adjusts to the height. The highest point, Larkya Pass at 5,160 meters (16,929 feet), is both a challenge and a reward, with breathtaking views all around.

The ascend to Bhimthang at 3,590 meters or 11,778 feet enables recuperation by returning to lower altitudes. Understanding the elevation of the Manaslu Circuit is one of the keys to a successful trek. Drinking ample amounts of water and taking slow climbs will help the body acclimatize, making the trek both safer and a lot more enjoyable as the stunning landscapes unfold.
