If you have a free day in Kathmandu, before a trek, after one, or on a short layover, there's a lot you can do without staying overnight. Our day trips range from guided walks through UNESCO World Heritage Sites to easy hikes on the hills around the valley and a one-hour flight past Everest. Every trip includes hotel pickup and drop-off, a guide and private transport, and most get you back in time for dinner.

Heritage and Culture Tours
The Kathmandu Valley has seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites within a short drive of each other, more than most countries have in total. A guide makes a real difference here, explaining the history, the festivals and the everyday rituals you'll see happening around the temples.
The Kathmandu Heritage Tour covers four of the most important sites in five hours: Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath (the Monkey Temple), the great stupa of Boudhanath and the Hindu temple complex of Pashupatinath on the Bagmati River. If you only have one day, this is the one to choose.
The Bhaktapur and Patan Tour visits the valley's two other royal cities. In Bhaktapur you'll see the 55-Window Palace, the five-tiered Nyatapola Temple and Pottery Square. In Patan, you visit Durbar Square, the Golden Temple and the Patan Museum, one of the best museums in Nepal.
For something quieter, the Namobuddha and Panauti Tour heads southeast of the valley to Namobuddha, one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in Nepal, on a hilltop at around 1,750 m. You then visit Panauti, a small Newar town with old temples and very few tourists.
Day Hikes Around the Valley
The hills around Kathmandu are a good way to stretch your legs before a trek, or to see mountain views if you aren't trekking at all. All three hikes are graded easy and suit anyone who walks regularly.
Nagarkot Hiking starts in the old town of Sankhu and climbs through villages and farmland to Nagarkot at 2,175 m. On a clear day the view stretches from Annapurna and Langtang in the west to the Everest range in the east.
Champadevi Day Hiking starts from Pharping, southwest of the city, and climbs through pine and rhododendron forest to the Champadevi summit at 2,278 m, with views of Langtang and Ganesh Himal. On the way back you stop at Taudaha Lake and Chobhar Gorge.
Jamacho Hiking begins at Raniban and climbs through the forest of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park to the small monastery at Jamacho, 2,128 m. It's the best choice if you enjoy birdwatching and forest walks, and the view back over the valley is excellent.
Mountain Views Without Hiking
The Chandragiri Hill Tour takes a cable car up to 2,551 m on the valley's southwestern rim. At the top, you can visit the Bhaleshwor Mahadev Temple and, on a clear day, see from Annapurna to Langtang and Manaslu. It's the easiest way to get a Himalayan view from Kathmandu.
The Everest Mountain Flight leaves Kathmandu early in the morning and flies along the Himalaya for about an hour, passing Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu and Ama Dablam. Every passenger gets a window seat. It's the only way to see Everest up close without trekking.
Which Day Trip Should You Choose?
- You have one day and want the essentials: Kathmandu Heritage Tour.
- You've seen Kathmandu and want more history: Bhaktapur and Patan Tour.
- You want to see Everest without trekking: Everest Mountain Flight.
- You want mountain views with no walking: Chandragiri Hill Tour.
- You want a warm-up walk before your trek: Nagarkot, Champadevi or Jamacho hiking.
- You want somewhere peaceful away from tourists: Namobuddha and Panauti.
When Is the Best Time for Day Trips?
Heritage tours run all year. For mountain views, October to December and February to March give the clearest skies, and early mornings are best. From June to September, monsoon clouds usually hide the Himalaya and the hiking trails get muddy, although the valley is green and quieter. The Everest flight depends on clear weather, so we recommend booking it early in your stay to leave room to reschedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best day trip from Kathmandu?
For most first-time visitors, the Kathmandu Heritage Tour is the best single day out, covering four UNESCO World Heritage Sites in five hours. If you want mountain views, the Everest Mountain Flight or a Nagarkot hike are the top choices.
Are entrance fees included?
Monument and heritage site entrance fees are paid separately on our culture tours. Your guide will tell you the fees at each site and help you buy tickets.
Can I do a day trip on the day I arrive or before my flight home?
Yes. Half-day options like the Kathmandu Heritage Tour or Chandragiri Hill Tour fit around arrival or departure flights. We avoid booking the Everest Mountain Flight on your last day, in case weather delays it.
What happens if the Everest flight is cancelled?
The flight only goes in clear weather. If it's cancelled, airlines usually offer another date or a refund. Booking early in your trip gives you time to fly on a later morning.
Are the day hikes suitable for children and older travellers?
Yes, if they're used to walking for a few hours. The hikes are graded easy, and we can shorten the route or adjust the pace for families and older travellers.
