Road trips and jeep tours let you reach Himalayan villages, high lakes and the walled city of Lo Manthang without spending days on foot. You travel by private 4WD with a driver and guide, stop wherever the view or a village is worth it, and sleep in hotels or mountain guesthouses. They suit senior travellers, families with mixed fitness, and anyone who wants to see the mountains up close but doesn't want to trek.
A note on the roads: mountain roads in Nepal are rough, narrow and often unpaved. Expect long, bumpy days with plenty of photo stops. That's part of the adventure, and our drivers know these routes well.

Ghandruk Jeep Tour: The Gentlest Mountain Trip
The Ghandruk Jeep Tour is the easiest way to stay in a real Himalayan village. From Pokhara, a jeep takes you up to Ghandruk, a Gurung village at 2,012 m facing Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre. You spend a morning exploring the stone lanes and the village museum, then drive to Jhinu Danda to soak in the natural hot springs by the river. There's no trekking at all, and the trip runs almost all year.
It's our top choice for grandparents, young children and anyone who wants mountain village life without the walking.
Upper Mustang by Jeep: Lo Manthang Without the Trek
Upper Mustang, the old Kingdom of Lo, sits in the rain shadow north of the Annapurnas and feels more like Tibet than Nepal. A road now reaches Lo Manthang, the walled capital at 3,840 m, which means you can experience the region in a few days by jeep rather than two weeks on foot.
The Upper Mustang Jeep Tour drives from Pokhara through Kagbeni to Lo Manthang, with time for its monasteries and the cave dwellings at Chhoser near the Tibetan border. On the way back, you stop at Muktinath, a sacred temple for both Hindus and Buddhists, before returning via Ghorepani.
The Poon Hill & Upper Mustang Jeep Tour starts with a short pre-dawn hike up Poon Hill for sunrise over Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, then drives north via Muktinath into Upper Mustang. It includes Lo Manthang, the cave sites around it and a trip to Korala, the border pass with Tibet at 4,660 m.
Upper Mustang is a restricted area. Both tours need a special permit, currently US$500 per person, plus an Annapurna Conservation Area permit. We arrange both for you.
Tilicho Lake Tour: Drive In, Trek Up
The Tilicho Lake Tour uses jeeps to cover the long approach through the Marsyangdi Valley to Manang, then switches to two days on foot to reach Tilicho Lake at 4,919 m, one of the highest lakes in the world. It's a fast way to see a place that usually takes over two weeks of trekking.
Be aware that this is the most demanding trip on this page. You still walk up to nearly 5,000 m, and because the jeep gains height quickly, altitude is a real factor. It suits fit, active travellers who are comfortable with a steep trail and are happy to turn back if they feel unwell. If you'd prefer no trekking at all, choose one of the other tours.
Rara Lake Tour: Nepal's Largest Lake
Rara Lake, in the far west, is Nepal's largest lake and sits at 2,990 m inside Rara National Park, surrounded by pine forest. The Rara Lake Tour flies from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then travels by jeep through Kalikot and the Sinja Valley, taking three days to reach the lake. You spend a full day there, with an optional hike to Murma Top at 3,650 m for a view over the whole lake.
The drives are long and the lodges are simple, but very few tourists make it this far, and the lake is stunning. For a longer trip that adds a tiger safari, see our Rara Lake & Bardiya Tiger Safari.
Which Jeep Tour Should You Choose?
- No walking and travelling with older family members or kids: Ghandruk Jeep Tour.
- Tibetan culture and Lo Manthang without trekking: Upper Mustang Jeep Tour.
- Mustang plus a Himalayan sunrise: Poon Hill & Upper Mustang Jeep Tour.
- A high-altitude lake with only a couple of hiking days: Tilicho Lake Tour.
- Somewhere truly off the tourist map: Rara Lake Tour.
When Is the Best Time for a Jeep Tour?
March to May and October to November are best for all of these tours, with stable roads and clear mountain views. Upper Mustang lies in the rain shadow and can be visited through the summer, although landslides on the lower road can cause delays. The Ghandruk Jeep Tour runs almost all year. Avoid Rara Lake and Tilicho during the monsoon (June to August), when roads are often blocked, and in winter, when snow can close the high areas.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you drive to Lo Manthang in Upper Mustang?
Yes. A road now connects Jomsom and Kagbeni with Lo Manthang. You still need a restricted area permit and a licensed guide, which we arrange as part of the tour.
Are jeep tours suitable for senior travellers?
Yes, especially the Ghandruk Jeep Tour, which stays below 2,100 m and involves no trekking. The Upper Mustang tours are also popular with older travellers, as long as they are comfortable with long, bumpy drives and altitudes of around 3,800 m.
Can you get altitude sickness on a jeep tour?
Yes. Driving gains height faster than walking, so your body has less time to adjust. Our itineraries pace the climb where possible, and your guide will watch for symptoms. Drink plenty of water and tell your guide if you feel unwell.
How comfortable are the roads?
Mountain roads in Nepal are mostly rough and unpaved, with some long driving days. We use private 4WD vehicles with experienced local drivers, and we stop regularly for breaks, meals and photos.
Do I need to walk at all?
On most of these tours, only short walks around villages and monasteries. The exceptions are the Tilicho Lake Tour, which includes two trekking days, and the optional hike at Rara Lake.
